Obama Pushing Hard on Civil Rights
September 1st, 2009
BET.com - NEWS YOU SHOULD KNOW

African-Americans have been disproportionately targeted by law enforcement, charged with more serious crimes and sentenced more harshly whites. Regardless of the motives of law enforcement, African-Americans can and should take a very proactive approach to their defense in order to ensure that no, or lesser, charges are filed.
I am a private criminal defense attorney having left the Public Defender's Office several years ago. When I was a Deputy Public Defender, I represented defendants after ch…

This, for Some, is How Life Is
by
Ernie McCray
I was cruising around 16th Street
to wheel up Market
on my way home
after a stop for cat food
at San Diego Pet Supply.
I was just taking in the scenery,
the collection of homeless beings
lying down in dazes
or walking by,
mumbling and grumbling,
some mumbling and grumbling to themselves,
some mumbling and grumbling to everybody else,
some with tears that would fill wells,
some with laughter that gave birth to chills.
This, for some, is how life is…

Douglass, Frederick (dŭg'lus) [key], c.1817–1895, American abolitionist, b. near Easton, Md. The son of a black slave, Harriet Bailey, and an unknown white father, he took the name of Douglass (from Scott's hero in The Lady of the Lake) after his second, and successful, attempt to escape from slavery in 1838.
At New Bedford, Mass., he found work as a day laborer. An extemporaneous speech before a meeting at Nantucket of the Massachusetts Anti-Slavery Society in 1841 was so effective that he was…

The Little Rock Nine, as they later came to be called, were the first black teenagers to attend all-white Central High School in Little Rock, Arkansas, in 1957. These remarkable young African-American students challenged segregation in the deep South and won.
Although Brown v. Board of Education outlawed segregation in schools, many racist school systems defied the law by intimidating and threatening black students—Central High School was a notorious example. But the Little Rock Nine were deter…
